S.S. Central America The side-wheeler and sail steamship S.S. Central America left port off the east coast of the Isthmus of Panama. A few days later on September 8th, 1857 the vessel stopped in Havana Cuba, a popular port during those times. From there it continued on its long journey to New York City. Four days into the journey the Central America encountered a hurricane the size and magnitude of Hugo the 1989 monster. Flooded and loosing power, overwhelmed by giant waves the S.S. Central America lost its battle with the storm. With over 400 passengers, 38,000 pieces of mail, and almost 3 tons of gold on board. And on Saturday at 8:00 PM, September 12, 1857, the vessel floundered and disappeared beneath the waves to the depths of 8,000 feet, approximately 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Until recently the technology to be able to recover treasure at the depths of 8,000 feet did not exist. Although gold ingots were once an important art of California gold Rush commerce, virtually all have disappeared throughout the generations. No gold ingots of comparable size were known to exist anywhere, and even the smaller ingots that did exist were considered unobtainable.
